Do You Need Winter Tires in Calgary?

Winter tires grip better than all-seasons below about 7°C, snow or not. When to switch in Calgary, how to size a winter set, and how to store the other one.

The short answer

Yes, if you drive year-round. Below about 7°C, winter compounds outgrip all-seasons whether or not there is snow, because the rubber stays soft in the cold. On a performance car that left the factory on summer tires, a dedicated winter set is the single best safety upgrade you can buy.

01

It is about temperature, not snow

Tire rubber is tuned for a temperature range. A summer or all-season compound stiffens as it gets cold and grips less, even on dry pavement.

A winter compound stays pliable in the cold, and its tread is cut to bite into snow and clear slush. Look for the mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall.

Calgary spends months below 7°C, with chinooks that swing the temperature both ways in a day. That is winter tire weather.

Sizing a winter set

Winter fitment is not just the same size in a different compound. Sizing, load rating, compound and season all have to be matched to your car and Calgary’s roads.

  • Wheels have to clear the brakes, which matters on performance cars
  • Offset and width decide whether the set fits and clears
  • Tire pressure sensors need to be serviced or programmed for the second set

Our wheel and tire service in Calgary confirms fitment before anything is ordered.

When to switch

Switch when daily temperatures settle below about 7°C, not when the first snow arrives. By then every shop in the city is busy.

Switch back in spring once it stays above that mark. Winter compounds wear quickly on warm pavement.

Driving to the mountains? Many highways in British Columbia require winter tires from October through spring, so check before you go.

Questions drivers ask

Do I really need winter tires in Calgary?

Below about 7°C, winter compounds outgrip all-seasons regardless of snow. If you drive your car year-round here, a dedicated winter set is the single best safety upgrade you can buy.

Can I use my summer performance tires in the cold?

No. Summer compounds harden in the cold and lose grip well before there is snow on the road.

Do I need a second set of wheels?

Not strictly, but a dedicated winter set saves mounting and balancing twice a year and protects your summer wheels from salt and gravel.

Will winter wheels clear my brakes?

They have to be checked. We work out offset, width and clearance before you buy, so the new set fits, clears and does what you wanted it to do.

How should I store the off-season set?

Clean, dry, out of sunlight and away from heat. We give straight answers on storing the off-season set properly at every changeover.
